Welcome to Long Island Children's Writers & Illustrators (LICWI)

Penny Weber
We are an organization dedicated to the pursuit of writing and illustrating children's
literature. We support, guide and nurture budding authors and illustrators as well
as established authors and illustrators.
Our goal is to create quality works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry that educate, entertain, and inspire children of all ages.

Our History
Fifteen years ago author and publisher, Joi Nobisso, and illustrator, Bijou LeTord, founded the East End Children's Book Writers. The ten dedicated members met in kitchens, libraries and living rooms. Soon, word of this unique group got around and new faces began joining. East End Children's Book Writers was growing by leaps and bounds. It moved to St. Joseph's college in Patchogue, New York in the early 1990s. In 2002, the members approved the group's name change to Long Island Children's Writers and Illustrators (LICWI). As a result of these fifteen years of critiquing manuscripts, art and supporting each other, LICWI members have an outstanding record of award winning publications for both authors and illustrators.
Our Mission
We pledge to offer unbiased, professional and honest critiques of manuscripts and illustrations. We also share creative ideas and solutions, and provide up-to-date information about children's publishing and basic writing support.
We, at LICWI, strongly believe that discriminating against anyone because of race, color or religion destroys the bond we share with our young readers. In this noble profession it is our job to fill a child's heart and mind with as much cultural diversity as possible. Our members come from all walks of life and all ability levels. All are welcome.
