We are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the pursuit of writing and illustrating children's literature. We support, guide, and nurture budding authors and illustrators as well as established authors and illustrators.
Our goal is to create quality works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry that educate, entertain, and inspire children of all ages. To this end, we occasionally welcome guests to teach us. Please explore our website by clicking any of the links at the top of the page.

Our History

Over twenty years ago author and publisher Joi Nobisso and illustrator Bijou LeTord founded the East End Children's Book Writers. The ten dedicated members met in kitchens, libraries, and living rooms. Soon, word of this unique group got around and new faces joined. East End Children's Book Writers grew by leaps and bounds. It moved to St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, New York, in the early 1990s. In 2002, the members
approved the group's name change to Long Island Children's Writers and Illustrators (LICWI). We are now meeting online and looking for a new home for in-person sessions. As a result of these years of critiquing manuscripts and art and supporting each other, LICWI members have an outstanding record of award-winning publications.

Our Mission Statement

LICWI provides a collegial and nurturing environment for published and unpublished writers and illustrators. This includes giving meaningful critiques and constructive feedback on works-in-progress, with mutual support and respect between those seeking a response to their work and those offering it. We aim to foster the development of technique, to strive for the use of fresh, imaginative, and honest language, to work
toward the strongest melding of words and art, and to hone the skills of our craft in order to produce publishable works of literary and artistic excellence for children.
